How to track hockey shots on Apple Watch
An Apple Watch can count your shots from the way your wrist moves. Here is the setup with Hockeywise: one short calibration, then nothing to tap.
Steps
Download Hockeywise on iPhone and Apple Watch
Install Hockeywise from the App Store on your iPhone and open it on your watch.
Calibrate for two minutes
Record a few wrist shots, snap shots and slap shots, some face-offs and ordinary stick handling. This teaches the watch your wrist rather than an average one.
Start a skate or a practice
Start a skate for a game, or use practice mode at stick-and-puck, where shot counting runs on its own.
Shoot as normal
The watch counts shots and face-offs by type: wrist, snap, slap or other. Low-confidence motions are left out rather than guessed.
Check shots by type on your phone
After the skate, the sheet shows shots by type and force, and puts each shot on the shift where it happened.
Hockeywise is not in the App Store yet; it launches in early 2027. Join the waitlist and we email you the day it is live.
What the watch can and cannot see
A watch on your wrist sees the swing, not the puck. That is enough to tell a wrist shot from a slap shot, and a face-off from stick handling, once it has learned your motion. It cannot tell whether a shot was on net. Hockeywise does not claim accuracy figures until they are measured on labelled games, and it leaves out motions it is unsure about.
Shots in context
A shot count on its own answers how many. On the game sheet each shot sits on a shift, so you can see shots per on-ice minute and how shot volume falls in the third period.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Apple Watch count hockey shots?
Yes. Hockeywise reads wrist motion and counts wrist, snap and slap shots and face-offs after a two-minute calibration.
Why is calibration needed?
Everyone shoots differently. Calibration records your own shots so the watch compares new motions to yours, not to an average player.
Where can I download Hockeywise?
