How to
How to see where you fade in the third period
Every player knows the third-period legs. This is how to put numbers on them with an Apple Watch: ice per shift by third, and how well you recover on the bench.
Steps
Download Hockeywise on iPhone and Apple Watch
Install Hockeywise from the App Store and complete the two-minute calibration.
Track a full game
Start a skate at warm-up and play. Shifts and heart rate are recorded without any taps.
Open the fade chart
On your iPhone, the fade chart shows ice per shift for each third of the game. A shorter last bar means shorter, slower shifts late.
Check bench recovery
Look at how far your heart rate falls between shifts. Slower recovery as the game goes on is the usual cause of the fade.
Act on the coach’s note
With Pro+ Insights, the coach’s read ranks what to fix, for example: shorten shifts in the last third.

What the fade looks like
The fade chart plots metres skated per shift, grouped by third. If the last third is lower than the first, you are either cutting shifts short or skating them slower. Pair it with bench recovery: if your heart rate is still high when you step back on, the bench was too short for the shift before it.
Fixes that follow
Shorter shifts, longer benches, and an even first period. The sheet will not play the game for you, but it tells you which of those is the one to change first.
Frequently asked questions
What causes the third-period fade in hockey?
Usually shifts that stay long while bench recovery gets shorter or slower. Heart rate that stops dropping between shifts is the tell.
How does Hockeywise show it?
The fade chart compares ice per shift in the first and last thirds, and bench recovery shows heart rate after every shift.
